Mission Statement

The Association of Thoreau and Kokosing has the following mission: To foster a multicultural "village" and community that transcends location, in which people from all social backgrounds can work and play together as a unified, nurturing, loving community.

    Objectives:

  • To create and manage a source of funding for scholarships to assist with community participation in AKT's and similar organizations' programs.
  • To preserve and continually improve the networks of communication and fellowship that have already been established among current alumni of Camps Thoreau and Kokosing.
  • To preserve, treasure and care for the land upon which the camp will be situated. This will include working to foster environmentalism and the teaching of good stewardship of our natural resources while promoting the "best practices" in outdoor education and summer camping.
  • To create and manage a children's summer camp in the spirit of the former Camps Thoreau and Kokosing, carrying on a tradition of critical thinking, democratic community living, environmental awareness, social justice, and fair play. AKT will strive to ensure that children from economically disadvantaged, and socially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, will have the opportunity to participate fully in each camp session.
