DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE FORMER SITE OF THOREAU-IN-VERMONT

 

From the NYC Area: I-95 North to I-91 North (or Cross Bronx Expressway to Hutchinson River Parkway North, to I-684 North, to I-84 East, which meets I-91 in Hartford, CT). Take I-91 North through Connecticut and Massachusetts and into Vermont. Go to exit #14 in VT – this is the exit for Thetford and Route 113. *At the stop sign at the end of the ramp, turn LEFT onto Route 113. Go about nine miles on Route 113 (passing through the hamlets of Thetford Hill, Thetford Center, and Post Mills), until you come to the hamlet of West Fairlee. In West Fairlee, turn left onto Beanville Road (1^st left after gas station/auto repair shop on your left). **Go one mile and turn left, up a steep hill onto Miller Pond Road. Go just under two miles (note that the road is only paved for the first part – up the steep hill – after that it is dirt). The camp driveway will be on your right. There is a split rail fence in front. Driving time from mid-town Manhattan is 5.5-6 hours. Caution: State Police in CT, MA, and VT do use radar on I-91.

 

From New Jersey & Points South: NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, or your favorite road to I-95 North. Cross the George Washington Bridge, and head EAST AND North on the Cross Bronx Expressway (I-95). Then proceed as above. Driving time: 6+ hours.

 

From the Greater Boston Area: Take I-93 North (or I-95 to I-93). Follow I-93 North to I-89 North, which intersects with I-91 at White River Jct., VT. Take I-91 North, to exit #14, and then proceed as in the directions from the NYC area above (see * above). Driving time 3+ hours.

 

From the Providence, RI Area: Take I-95 North to the junction with I-93. (NOTE: You may want to use I-495 to go around Boston and avoid the downtown traffic), and then proceed as in the directions from the Boston area above. Driving time: 4.5 hours

 

From Northern Vermont: Take I-89 South to Barre, and take Route 302 Eats to Route 110. Pro\ceed South on Route 110 to Chelsea, VT Turn left onto Route 113 and follow it through Vershire and into

West Fairlee. At the “B&B Cash Market” on your right as you come into the hamlet of West Fairlee, turn right onto Beanville Road, and then proceed as in the directions from the NYC area (see ** above). Driving time from Burlington, VT is about 2 hours.

 

Important: For those of you who use map quest or google maps – I am not sure of the current street address of the property (it is no longer “One Thoreau Way”). You could certainly google/map quest the intersection of Miller Pond Road and Beanville Road in West Fairlee, VT.

 

I do not think there will be an active land line phone at the camp. But if you get lost in the local area, just ask for Miller Pond Road – and folks should be able to direct you in.

 

Gas Stations are located in West Fairlee, Post Mills, and Thetford Center, with most open on Sunday during the summer. Please note that the toll free roads either have limited or no services on them, and you will have to exit for food, gasoline and (in some case) for rest rooms as well.
